About Massa's Pizzeria

After many delays, Massa’s Coal Fired Brick Oven Pizzeria has opened in the Huntington space (fronting a municipal parking lot) that last hosted Guido’s. Pizzaiolo Bill Massa, whose family owns the restaurant, had already attracted a following at his former pizza spot on Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station (now operating as Monaco's Coal-Fired Pizza), which he sold in 2009. Here in Huntington, pies are baked in a coal-fueled oven at temperatures exceeding 900 degrees; they're finished in 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. Pizza isn't sold by the slice, but, rather, by the whole pie. There are three sizes — personal (10-inch, available only at lunch); medium (14-inch) and large (18-inch).

On the menu: A simple Margherita or white pizza ($7.50, $16, $18.50) and specialty pies (available only in medium and large sizes), one topped with caramelized onion and marinara ($20, $22), another a white pie crowned with broccoli rabe, sausage and garlic ($24, $28).

Also available: an antipasto salad ($12.50), coal oven-cooked pepperoni chips ($7.50), calzones ($14, $18), chicken parm ($13.75) and ziti or spaghetti marinara ($9.50; $4 extra for meatballs).

The place has a full bar with two televisions where you can sit, eat, drink and watch pizzas being made.

The Massa family is pizza royalty, of sorts, being related to both Patsy Grimaldi, who founded Patsy’s (which became Grimaldi’s) in Brooklyn and, also, to Patsy Lancieri, who founded Patsy’s of East Harlem.

Massa’s Coal Fired Brick Oven Pizzeria is at 80 Gerard St., Huntington, 631-923-3473.

A Brief History

Lombardi's, opened in 1905, was America's first pizzeria. The lineage of many of the area's best (and legendary) pizzerias can be traced directly back to Lombardi’s as employees of the pizzeria branched out to open other classic coal oven eateries including Totonno’s, John’s on Bleecker Street, and Patsy’s (which is the Massa family connection). The direct "descendants" of those Founding Fathers of the old world tradition remain alive today and can be found in Patsy Grimaldi's wonderful current eatery, Juliana's in Brooklyn, and other fine restaurants such as Pepe's and Sally's. Mass-produced, commercial chain restaurant versions of the coal or brick oven style can be found at places like Anthony's, Tony Sacco's and Bertucci's.

Offshoots of the traditional style abound. Some of the notable local favorites include:

Denino's • Di Fara • Louie & Ernie's • Nick's • Fornino • Lucali • Keste • Motorino's • Paulie Gee's • Umberto's • Sbarro's • Company (Co.) • Joe's • Pizzeria Uno • California Pizza Kitchen • Pizza Hut • Domino's • Papa John's

Not-so-local favorites:

Reginelli's • Monza • Gino's East • Vito & Nick's • Pizano's

There are many variations of pies that include:

Pizza Margherita • Pizza Napoletana • Pizza Romana • Pizza Viennese • Pizza Capricciosa • Pizza Quattro Formaggi • Pizza Bianca • Pizza Alla Casalinga

What areas do most people come from that visit us:

Huntington, Huntington Bay, Cold Spring Harbor, Lloyd Neck, Lloyd Harbor, Syosset, Woodbury, Melville, Long Island, New York City, Brooklyn, Queens, Connecticut, New Jersey and the planet.

Other attractions in the area:

The Paramount Theater (where Long Island native Billy Joel played in October),
Heckscher Park
Caumsett Park
Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery
Coindre Hall
